Return from ISIS- a documentary

Image
Little Sam and Laurie I am not surprised that crime thrillers are many times inspired from real life. I say so because I saw a documentary which felt nothing less than a crime thriller. Yes, ofcourse as viewers, we can only imagine what life would be like in an ISIS territory. But for people in captivity, can life be anything less than a nightmare? Set in America in 2017, the documentary starts with Laurie, the sister of Sam who was taken to ISIS. She was taken by her muslim immigrant husband of Moroccan origin to the ISIS territory along the Syrian border. She had a lovely little boy of 8 from her previous marriage and the stepfather took good care of him even after the couple had a little daughter. There are many hundred Americans who joined ISIS but the journalist explains what makes Sam's story so different from others. She was taken against her will. Sam The documentary is 54 minutes long and there is no moment you would like to fast forward your video ...

The Egyptian Pyramids- an animated short film

Image
It is a funny little animated short film and just about 3 minutes long. It was uploaded to YouTube in 2014 and has over 21M views as of now. Made by a group of some brilliant 4th year students of an animated school based in France, the film is a perfect example of creativity and perfection. Some might think what kind of a story can one tell in 3 minutes? Then maybe you should head straight to the end to find a link to this movie.  The scene is located in 1920 Cairo, the capital of Egypt and as you may be aware, Egypt is most famous for its pyramids. The makers have made good use of the suspense and theories revolving around the hidden secrets of the pyramids. We see a man digging a pit. He can be identified as a researcher or an archaeologist. He is brushing the dust off a violet plate and while turning it around, he sees many symbols. At first he dusts off the sand only to jump at the bleep of the device. He doubts if it is a mobile phone but hears the soun...

A Mighty Heart by Mariane Pearl- Book review

Image
Back in 2020, I came across a piece of news about the murder of an American journalist Daniel Pearl . I thought of writing an article about all the journalists who lost their lives due to terrorist organisations. Finally it is in 2022 that I am reminded of the case again and I came to know that there is a book written by the wife of the slain journalist. It is now that I understand what a high profile case it was. The book is a personal account of the time before, during and after the murder of Daniel in 2002 and is written by his wife, Mariane. An immense task and not easily understood and not at all to be cheapened as a publicity stunt. It takes immense courage to recollect and narrate the sorrows of the most tragic moments of one's life, especially when you are about to bring a new life into this world.  Daniel Pearl is the South-Asian correspondence chief of The Wall Street Journal, a mediahouse based in USA, and Marianne is working with a French publication. ...

The Tree by Gobelins- animated short movie review

Image
Made by an animation school based in France, The Tree is about a father- daughter bond and the message I gathered is, "Love can move mountains". The movie was uploaded on YouTube in 2018. Link is available at the bottom, please scroll below. The scene begins with a hardworking old man though grown old with years but very hopeful and full of energy. Know how? The reason is his young princess who departed too early..  The plot He goes up a mountain to reach a handpump located at the tip and starts filling his jar till the evening, slides down using his sledge, waters the dried up plant and saves just a drop for himself. Moving back to his hut reminds him of his daughter who left him a reason to live. She was a cheerful little girl, though ailing but a powerful source of positivity throughout the movie. Like every young child, she was an artist expressing her creativity on the walls and yes, what she drew on the wall was a blossoming tree, something she would have ba...

Shutter Island

Image
Shutter Island is a psychological thriller. And it is 14+, let me tell you why. I showed this movie to my 13 year old nephew and had to pause after every 5 minutes to narrate the story to him. The director of the movie has beautifully translated a book by the same name into a movie. Summary The movie begins with a naval officer who is sent on a duty with another naval officer to a mental asylum located on a far-off island. A patient is supposedly missing from the hospital and the two are sent on a mission to find her. But things seem weird from the very moment they land on the island, to the characters as well as to us. Their guns are taken away and strict instructions are given not to go to the C ward "where highly dangerous patients are admitted". It can be seen that the staff is not cooperative and everybody speaks in a pre-trained manner. The viewers gets confirmation of their suspicion the moment a lady writes to the protagonists to "run" and that t...
